Today, we'll be discussing... you guessed it, Banned Hashtags on Instagram.
Why? Well, using broken or banned tags on Instagram can be damaging to the health of your page.
Using them can reduce your engagement rates, result in the shadow banning of your posts or page and worse, losing your account!
I had started my research on the subject almost a month ago and had planned on writing this shortly there after. Little did I realize, the subject at hand is much more complex than I'd anticipated.
Between all of the reading, the actual testing and retesting... I'm left with a wealth of knowledge on Instagram Hashtags. Much more than I could possibly publish here on JustTheTip! So I'll be doing just that, sharing with you some important tips on how to use and not use hashtags on Instagram.
Put simply, banned hashtags have been put in place to stop the reach of spammy Instagram accounts. As well as preventing the spread of Illicit Content.
Although some hashtags only have a temporary ban, many are permanent. And, what happens if you used these banned hashtags? You risk your account seeing a dramatic decrease in engagement, having your account temporarily shadowbanned… or worse.
For example, the hashtag #happythanksgiving was completely overrun with spam, so they banned it. From here on out, if you use the hashtag #happythanksgiving, not only will your content most likely not show up for that hashtag, you might also be flagged for spam. The repetitive use of banned hashtags, leading to multiple flags to your account, could even result in shadow banning or account removal.
How do I know if a hashtag is banned?
Of course, in order to avoid these forbidden hashtags, you have to know which tags are banned. How is anyone supposed to know that #happythanksgiving is considering “spam”?
Essentially, there is no one source that can solve this problem for you. Since the banned hashtags change on a daily basis, it is your responsibility to check all hashtags and do your research before including them in a post.
This was what I meant when I’d mentioned this being a tedious subject to research. Just when I thought I had a solid list, they’d change! For example, #SwingersLifestyle was banned, it is no longer. #sexy #bdsm #ass all banned when I last checked. Again, this can change. The bottom line, check your tags! Also, Try not to use anything too explicit.

How to view blocked hashtags on Instagram
All Instagram users should avoid using banned hashtags in 2019. Here's how to search if a hashtag is blocked or not:
- Tap on the magnifying glass icon, which in effect is the Explore’ tab.
- Type the hashtag in the search bar.
- If the hashtag doesn’t appear in the search results, then maybe it was banned.
On Instagram, hashtags can be banned either temporary or on an indefinite basis. If the ban is temporarily, it might remain so for a day and appear the next day.
- If the hashtag appears in the search results (you'll get the top results), tap Recent. Make sure you confirm that it has not, indeed, been banned. Hashtags that show in the search results may not necessarily show the related posts.
